Mathematics - Years 5&6 - What's Your 2040?

Mathematics – Years 5&6

Quick summary: 2040 is an innovative feature documentary that looks to the future, but is vitally important NOW! Director Damon Gameau embarks on a journey to explore what the future would look like by the year 2040 if we simply embraced the best solutions already available to us to improve our planet and shifted them rapidly into the mainstream.

2040 launched in UK & Irish cinemas in Nov 2019, and is now available for school & community screenings across the country. You can make a group booking for your class by visiting the 2040 Virtual Screenings page. These lessons have been designed with a media library to support teachers.

These lessons are designed to tune your students in to the concepts covered in the film, and to better prepare them for viewing. Each lesson will immerse students in and connect with the documentary film 2040. Students will then be better equipped to watch the 2040 documentary and explore existing solutions to the filmmaker’s concerns about the future. Finally, students reflect on their experiences of the film.

Tuning in

A tuning in activity helps students to define and focus on the issues they will be dealing with in the unit of work.

Finding Out

Students will need to obtain more information about the issues they are going to investigate. They can identify questions of interest and research these either in small groups or on their own. Once information is gathered, it can be shared using chosen communication methods e.g. short presentations. Students can continue finding out by completing a range of investigations, including gathering data. They use appropriate methods to present and communicate what they have found out.

Considering Social Action

Students are given opportunities to apply their learning in real world situations, in the classroom, school, home or the local community.
